Loving God, we bow before you in humble adoration for your excellent greatness and incomparable power. Today, O Lord, we come to you in anguish, astonishment, and alarm over America's collapsing foundation of law and order. We know that the election of new leaders can bring understandable changes in how the government will address the common good. Yet, in a very short time of a new administration, we have witnessed efforts to:
Takeover the federal government with no accountability to Congress
Eliminate the federal workforce,
Destroy government-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and civil rights guarantees,
Eliminate the federal education structure that ensures a consistent standard of public school education for America’s 50 million children,
Reduce food and health programs for poor and hungry people here and abroad, and
Remove undocumented immigrants from churches, once a safe space.
O Lord, our God, if the elimination of waste, as claimed, was the only goal for these drastic changes, we would not bother you with our petition today. But, God, the primary agenda of the newly elected leadership is the elimination of programs for poor, sick, and vulnerable people and to raid the federal treasury so millionaires and billionaires receive substantial tax breaks.
Lord, your word in Psalm 11:3, 4 reminds us that in the midst of government lawlessness, you still reign, when you said, “The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do? But the Lord is in his holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven.” Help us, O Lord, to stand in the gap for the vulnerable as we pray without ceasing for your righteous strategies for resisting the actions of lawless leaders. And thank you, God, for settling our hearts and minds, knowing that you will have the last word in all things. In your mighty name, we pray, Lord Jesus. Amen.
