A Prayer for President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris

Updated: Nov 17, 2020

November 16, 2020 | Prayer by Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, NCNW National Chaplain and President of Skinner Leadership Institute

Almighty God, Creator, Maker, and Author of all life, how we praise your holy and righteous name. "We move and have our being in you” (Acts 17:28), so everything that concerns us, as your children, also concern you. You are a loving God of incomparable grace and unsurpassed mercy, so today, we ask you to incline your ear and hear our prayers for our nation, more divided by racial strife than at any time in our history. We implore you to hear the lament and grieving cries of over 11 million citizens stricken by the coronavirus pandemic and nearly 250,000 dead from this historic humanitarian disaster.

In the midst of these body blows to our fragile democracy, Lord, we celebrate the victory for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Only by your providential power could Mr. Biden, who served two terms as Vice President to the first African American President, Barack Obama, select the first African American, Indian American, and Jamaican American woman, as his Vice President. God, you are so awesome, astounding, and amazing! Only you could have inspired Black Americans and allies to meet every brazen tactic to steal the Black vote, with an even greater determination to vote like their lives depended on it, because it did!

But now, O God, despite nearly 80 million Americans supporting two leaders committed to a strong democracy, peace with justice, and life with dignity for all citizens, over 70 million Americans voted for continued white supremacy, including the majority of white women, Catholics, and evangelicals. God, today, we pray that you would strengthen and fortify Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that they might heal our divided nation. Move on them to assemble a diverse team of high character, high integrity, experienced men and women around them. May they be leaders totally loyal and committed to advancing policies that uphold the dignity, health, and economic well-being of all Americans to your glory. We pray this prayer in your Holy and Righteous Name, Lord God. Amen.
