A Prayer Commemorating the Failed January 6, 2021 Insurrection Against Democracy

Updated: Oct 30

O Lord, our God, we reflect today on the United States Capitol and bless your holy name for your keeping power over our lives and our nation. Deep in our hearts, we know for sure that if it had not been for you on our side on January 6, 2021, when a primarily White terrorist mob sought to bring down the seat of power, our democracy might have perished. So we praise you, God, for sustaining a fragile 246-year-old idea called Democracy that protects the common good against the whims of the self-interested few.

Thank you, God, for holding back the rising tide of White minority rulership and White Supremacy that shamefully includes White Christian Nationalists in an increasingly diverse America.

Thank you, Lord, for exposing the lie that a defeated former President won the election and for saving the overpowered law enforcement, lawmakers, and a Vice President whose very lives were threatened by the mob he inspired.

We pray today, O God, for those wounded and scarred, and for the families of the police officers who lost their lives defending our fragile democracy. And then, Lord, we pray that justice will "roll down like water," even to leaders at the highest level charged with insurrection by the bipartisan January 6th Committee.

As the dangers to our democratic form of government persist, God we will steadfastly lean on your word "to pray for all in authority so we may live quiet and peaceful lives" (1 Timothy 2:1-2) as we lift up principled, high-character leaders in our nation whose love for you, your word, and the people they serve far exceed all personal agendas for the good of all are advanced. In your matchless name, we

pray, Lord God. Amen.
